Forward Steps, what's it all about?

Interview with Joanne, Manager of Forward Steps Service

So Joanne, what is Forward Steps?

Forward Steps is an early intervention project funded under Families First in Neath Port Talbot Borough Council. The project begun on the 1st April 2018 and we currently support 72 families (as of 1st January 2019)

We support families who have a child or young person aged 0-25 years with a disability, pre and post diagnosis and we can offer families up to 16 weeks support, looking at;

·         Understanding disabilities

·         Positive parenting; supporting and reducing a child’s behaviour, setting limits

·         Challenging behaviour; Methods for dealing or avoiding this and coping strategies

·         Understanding diagnostic pathways and SEN

So what do the parents think of Forward Steps?

In 2018 we offered 54 sessions to parents and parents such as Sky said:

attending the sessions have helped me a lot, the group work has been very useful, I have found meeting other parents beneficial as it was great to hear what others are going through, the group sessions offered me as a parent a lot of support and I have really enjoyed attending.

As part of the project we are also able to offer parents 8 weeks support with our play therapist and the opportunity to meet other parents through workshops, training and in coffee mornings.”
