Forward Steps - Disabilities & Well-being 4 Disabled Children/Young People Service

The service supports families with disabled children/young people with improving their mental well-being. This will be achieved through a dedicated Family Disability Well-being Worker focused on supporting families to improve their mental well-being and emotional resilience.

The service offers:

  • 1 - 1 tailored counselling for disabled children and young people
  • Workshops for parents to up skill parents in order to support their disabled children and young people
  • Mental health support for the whole family including referrals to partners

Nicola Gnojek, Chairperson at Building Blocks commented on securing the grants saying: “It has been amazing news to have received the funding from the Community Foundation in Wales and Awards for all Wales. This means we can help reach families with children with disabilities and work towards strengthening their resilience in mental well-being. This pilot project is going to make a difference to so many children, young people and families”

How our service helps?

We have worked with a young person (BP - 17) who was unable to leave his house for more than very short periods and suffered extreme social anxiety as a result of trauma and perpetuated by his experience of his late diagnosis of autism. After 10 sessions with our qualified counsellor using adapted Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, BP had been able to attend a new course at college, is seeing friends in public and has hope for his future.

BP said, “I would 'never understand how much these sessions have meant to me and helped me live a normal life'”.

BPs parents thanked our service for our help and his familie’s Team Around the Family worker Charlotte also thanked us for our work with the family and how much of a difference it had made. Should the project continue, this young person would like to volunteer as peer support to help others in similar situations.
