Why volunteer with us?

There are lots of benefits to becoming a volunteer with us. You can learn new skills, improve your CV, build your confidence and make new friends. We’ve got lots of opportunities for you to get involved in, from helping us in childcare, or on our front desk to taking part in fundraising activities.

There are many different ways you can help families, children and young people. Whatever your skills and experience, and however much time you can offer, we have a volunteering opportunity for you. You’ll get support and training if you need it, and you’ll make a real difference.

Peer Mentor Role

Role description

Forward Steps at Building Blocks are looking to recruit enthusiastic people to become Peer Mentors in an exciting project providing support to families who have children with disabilities.

They may be experiencing difficulties, be vulnerable or need support to improve their confidence. Your role will be to provide a listening ear; befriend, be a positive role model and offer support and encouragement, so families and their children can reach their full potential.

Your role will be to help families solve their own problems recognising that it is key, to remain impartial and not to influence. Your aim as a mentor is to encourage, be a good listener and support families to make realistic plans in achieving their goals.

The role may have challenges but having the ability to remain positive and to be innovative in your approaches will be important.

Volunteer Administrator Role

Main objective: Administrative tasks in the office

Volunteer Role:

  • To assist in undertaking photocopying, filing, typing and printing
  • To assist in carrying out database work and record keeping
  • To assist in performing receptionist duties – dealing with face to face and telephone enquiries from the general public

Support by:               Full support and supervision will be provided by the Office Administrator  

Time commitment:    Minimum period of 3 months

Expenses:                  Out of pocket, expenses will be paid including travel and childcare

Training:                    Initial induction sessions

Person Specification:

  • Good verbal communications skills
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to relate to people
  • Good organisational
  • Good IT skills

Families Steering Group Member Volunteer Role 

Main objective: Our Families Steering Group helps us to identify, plan and deliver services for the families, children and young people who need them the most.

Volunteer Role:

  • To share information on how to support families in Neath Port Talbot area
  • Give Ideas on workshops or training to provide e.g. parenting, self confidence 
  • Opinions on what services meet your families needs the best
  • Offer advice & guidance on supporting children and children with additional needs and disabilities
  • Target areas that need more support

Support by:  Full support and supervision will be provided by the Family Development Officers  

Time commitment:  Meeting every 3 months

Expenses:  Out of pocket, expenses will be paid including travel and childcare

Training: Initial induction sessions

Person Specification:

  • Want to make a difference to families, children and young people lives

    Summer holidays are coming, join us at Building Blocks for our lots of holiday club fun! We offer two holiday clubs during those school holidays, both club are catered to give your child a fun experience. We offer Kids Block for children aged (3 - 7 years) and Youth Block for children aged ( 8 - 12 years). We also have a range of activities going on with lots of fun with a number of sessions to meet your families needs.......
